Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Your journey begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a representative from Zayla Tours will warmly welcome you. After a brief introduction, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation in Arusha, the gateway to Kilimanjaro. Nestled at the base of Mount Meru, Arusha is a bustling town that offers a mix of local culture, vibrant markets, and serene landscapes. You’ll have the evening to relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure. This is an excellent time to review your gear, meet your climbing team, and discuss the plan for the days ahead. The anticipation will build as you settle in, knowing that tomorrow marks the beginning of your Kilimanjaro ascent.

Day 2: Arusha to Umbwe Gate, Hike to Umbwe Cave Camp

  • Habitat: Montane Forest

 

Your adventure truly begins today as you drive from Arusha to the Umbwe Gate, the starting point of your climb. The drive takes you through picturesque landscapes, gradually rising in altitude as you approach the base of Kilimanjaro. After completing the necessary registration at the gate, you’ll start your ascent through the dense montane forest. This section of the route is steep and challenging, but it offers a rewarding immersion into the rich biodiversity of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. You’ll trek through towering trees draped in moss, with the sounds of forest wildlife accompanying you. The trail is less traveled, providing a sense of solitude and connection with nature. As you reach Umbwe Cave Camp, nestled in a clearing within the forest, you’ll set up camp and enjoy a hearty meal prepared by your team.

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Today’s trek will take you out of the forest and into the heath and moorland zone. The path is steep, but the landscape begins to open up, offering stunning views of the mountain’s southern glaciers and the surrounding valleys. The trail follows a ridge that narrows as you ascend, with the vegetation becoming more sparse. You’ll feel the altitude more today, but your body will begin to acclimate as you move higher. As you approach Barranco Camp, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the Barranco Wall, an imposing rock face that you’ll tackle tomorrow. The camp itself is located in a valley below the wall, offering a sheltered spot with dramatic scenery.

The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before rising again to Karanga Camp. As you approach Barafu Camp, you’ll see the summit of Kilimanjaro looming in the distance, a reminder of the challenge that awaits. Once at the camp, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the final ascent. The evening is spent resting and mentally preparing for the long night ahead.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Millennium Camp

  • Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles) total
  • Hiking Time: 10-14 hours (6-8 hours to the summit, 4-6 hours to Millennium Camp)
  • Habitat: Arctic summit to Moorland

 

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight, as you trek through the darkness towards Uhuru Peak. This is the most physically and mentally challenging part of the climb, with cold temperatures and thin air making progress slow. However, as dawn approaches and you near Stella Point, the first light of day will energize you for the final push to the summit. Standing at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is a moment of triumph and reflection. After taking in the panoramic views and capturing the moment with photos, you’ll begin the descent to Millennium Camp. The descent is demanding, but it’s a relief to know that the hardest part is over. At Millennium Camp, you’ll rest and enjoy a well-deserved meal.

The final day of your Kilimanjaro adventure involves a descent through the lush montane forest to Mweka Gate. The trail is gentle, and the pace is relaxed as you make your way down. The air becomes richer in oxygen, and the sounds of the forest return as you descend. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, a testament to your achievement. From here, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha, where a comfortable bed and hot shower await.
